An Interview with Mrs. Shyama Shree Chatterjee, Head Mistress, School of India

A school does for its children what nobody else can do. Nobody can deny the importance of good, holistic education and that does not mean scoring straight As or 10 CGPAs. A school’s role is way bigger and it starts right from when the child starts his/her education in preschool.

You know how strongly I feel about schools being happy places and children growing to their full potential without judgement or pressure. We have been fortunate enough to interact with an educator of experience and repute, Mrs. ShyamaShree Chatterjee, Principal School of India. We asked her plenty of questions and she was kind and patient enough to answer them for our readers.

Over to Mrs. ShyamaShree now.

SW: What according to you should a school do for its students?

SC: School is the second home for children. In fact children spend more waking hours at school than at home. Hence a school should ensure the academic development as well as the emotional and social well being of the students. Children have so much to tell about their experiences, joys and sorrows. Listening to them will solve most of their problems. Parents sometimes do not get so much time to spend with their children. Thus it is very important that the child feels comfortable enough to narrate the minutest detail of what seems important to her, to the teacher. A school should be child friendly not only in its infrastructure but in its overall attitude towards children.

SW: How important it is for children to have a balance between studying and extra-curricular activities?

SC:  Children these days are very intelligent. If we give them the opportunity to excel in academics alone, they will do so. If we give them the opportunity to excel in extra curricular activities also, they will do so equally well. The decision is on us whether we give them the right kind of exposure to curricular and co curricular activities. All our content knowledge comes from what was taught to us inside the classroom whereas our personality is shaped by the activities we enjoyed outside the four walls of the classroom. In today’s world, it is important to know the facts, but is equally, or sometimes more important to present the facts well. Therefore, a healthy balance between academics and extra curricular activities is absolutely essential.

SW: As an educator who has plenty of experience behind her, do you think every child is talented in his/her own way?

SC: Of course yes. Every child is unique. Don’t we see among ourselves how different each one of us is? These differences are not shortcomings; they are the unique strengths of every individual. We have to accept every child the way she is. We should harness talent right from childhood so that every child grows up with the confidence that she is good in certain areas and can work happily towards being better in the other areas.

SW: What should parents do to encourage their children and bring out the best in them?

SC: Parents should be facilitators in their child’s growth. They are responsible for creating an environment where a child can explore, experience, win and lose. For example when a parent is playing with his child, he should not always allow the child to win. It is important for parents to create situations where the child loses. He may throw a tantrum the first time, but the parent can carefully train him to accept defeat graciously. Another important virtue that parents have to consciously inculcate is sharing and caring. With one or two children in a family, it becomes impossible to create such situations. So they should participate in family functions, spend time at their ancestral homes, take slightly older children to celebrate their birthday in orphanages or old age homes and involve them in other such activities.

SW: You say that School of India is a happy school. What does that mean?

SC: School Of India is a happy school. The children come to school happily. They have teachers who are ever willing to listen to their little joys and worries. There is no comparison between them. Every child has to raise his or her own bar. There is something that every student looks forward to in school, be it academics, sports, music, dance, art or something else. With an ideal student teacher ratio, the students have the privilege of individual attention, getting selected for the numerous activities round the year and generally enjoy a happy family kind of an atmosphere at school.

SW: What does School Of India aim to do for its students?

SC: School Of India aims to provide a strong foundation in academics and life skills to all the students. Our students can stand proudly as Indians on a global platform and choose whichever career they want to pursue. I believe that if the base is firm, we can design any monument on it. There is no pressure on them to take up any particular profession. They just have to be good in whatever they do. And most importantly, they should be very good human beings with a zeal to add value to the world in their own way!

Her thoughts and ideas completely resonate with me and I am glad and hopeful that more and more educators think in this way and our schools become happy places where each child is appreciated and given an environment, where s/he can reach her/his full potential rather than a factory model which is adamant on turning individuals into products which must meet the required criteria.

5 ways to help children improve their English Language skills & Vocabulary

5 ways to help children improve their English Language skills & VocabularyEnglish is the first language in most schools and it is important that children learn to enjoy the languages whether English or any other for what they have to offer and not just as a subject which is a part of the curriculum.

Languages form the basis of communication and should be just that. By following these simple tricks at home, we can help our kids develop better vocabularies and better grasp of English language.

5 ways to improve language and vocabulary

Converse in proper, full sentences

One mistake that parents often make is continuing to talk in babyspeak even after the baby is able to speak well. Speaking in proper English encourages children to speak in proper sentences themselves thus improving their spoken English.

Read books to them

Many of you know that I am an avid reader and I aways wanted my daughter to love books. Thankfully, she too is fond of books and loves reading. Books provide not just the best entertainment, but also enrich the vocabulary in a natural, organic way.

Games

Games not just to entertain children but can be used in numerous ways to teach English and increase their vocabulary.

Scrabble

Scrabble or crossword is an eternal favourite which is great for improving vocabulary and learn new words. Scrabble encourages children to learn new words and spell them correctly and you get more points for uncommon words.

Word games

You can also devise your own new games to make learning new words and the language fun for kids. When I was a kid, I remember playing this game with my parents, where we had tell a word starting with the letter which the previous letter ended.

There was one more game, where we had to quickly write a name, a place, an animal and one thing with a randomly selected letter.

You can make up your own games too. Ms Anu Sanjo, English teacher from School of India, Bangalore suggests some super ways to use games to encourage English speaking and vocabulary enrichment.

Dramatics

Dramatics are one of the best ways to let children explore their creativity while also helping them explore and learn the language. Just like stories dramatics allow children to explore their creative side and also enhance their confidence. Children are naturally inclined to pretend play and they are actually acting through out the day. Yes, some children might be more comfortable while performing before people than others and it is all right. Just being on stage can be a big boost.

Ms. Anu Sanjo also talks about how dramatics and role play can enhance English language learning in the video.

Story telling

Last but nor the least, stories are the best way to encourage interaction as well as fire imagination in young minds. I tell stories to my daughter all day. We read from books, we make our own stories all the time and now she has started telling her own and changing endings of stories if she does not like or relate to them.

I remember she used to tell us the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears, but she didn’t like that bears scared her and she ran away. So her story used go something like this:

Bears find her sleeping on baby bear’s bed.

Papa Bear: “Get up, Goldilocks!”

Goldilocks got up.

Goldilocks: “I am sorry I broke your chair”

Baby Bear: “That’s OK! Nice to meet you”

Then they all went downstairs and lived happily ever after.( In her head the bedroom was upstairs.)

It is our personal experience that stories encourage use of language and not just English and also encourage independent thinking and imagination.

Weight gain recipe: How to make Homemade Dry Fruits Powder for Babies, Toddlers & Kids

This is one of the most requested recipes from our readers. Though it is very simple, but people often have trouble in making a nice dry fruit or nuts powder. It sometimes turns into paste or is not fine enough. Here we tell you the trick to make the perfect dry-fruit powder, which you can give to babies, toddlers or even older kids.

Nuts are a super food and have been given to children by mums and grand mums since time immemorial. I still remember my mother used to soak almonds at night and would make us eat them early in the morning. My daughter is not very fond of nuts except for cashew nut, so I make this powder and add it her porridges, halwa, kheer, even savoury foods.

How to make dry fruit powder for babies

What are the benefits of dry fruits powder/ nuts powder?

nuts

  • Nuts and dry fruits are not just packed with healthy protein, but also are great for a healthy heart and brain.
  • Nuts are rich in unsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin E and fiber. Nuts help in healthy growth, development and learning in kids.
  • Nuts and dry fruits are also high in calories and can help in weight gain in underweight children.
  • Nuts and dry fruits are also known to improve immunity in children.
  • Nuts and dry fruits are very good brain foods and can help in brain development and good memory.

How to make dry fruit powder for babies, toddlers & kids

Making dry fruit powder is fairly simple. We also have this video to take you through step by step procedure of making dry fruits powder in a simple way. We also share the trick to ensure that your powder remains a powder and does not turn to a paste.

Ingredients

1 cup almonds

1 cup cashew nuts

1/2 cup pistachio nuts

1/2 cup walnuts

25-30 saffron strands

Recipe

Heat a pan and dry roast almonds on all sides till they change color slightly and appear to be crunchy.

Take them out and put on a plate to cool down.

On the same pan, dry roast cashew nuts and keep aside to cool down.

Now dry roast walnuts and pistachios and cool them too.

Dry roast saffron on a few seconds and keep them aside.

Now put everything in a blender jar and grid to a fine powder.

While grinding, use the pulse mode or grind for only 10-15 seconds at a time.

Tips:

Do not roast all nuts together as they take different times to get roasted.

Let the nuts cool down completely before grinding.

Grind the nuts in small pulses of 10-15 seconds. This ensures that nuts do not release oils and turn into paste.

Keep stirring the powder after every pulse with the help of a spoon.

You can also add other nuts that your child likes like hazel nuts or peanuts.

How to use dry fruit powder/ nuts powder for babies, toddlers, kids?

You can add this dry fruit powder in child’s food in many ways.

  • You may add it to milk with a little bit of sugar and make a delicious drink similar to badam milk. Do not forget to check out our Instant kesar badam milk powder.
  • You may add this powder to breakfast cereals, porridge, oatmeals to increase the nutrition levels instantly.
  • When you make a halwa, add this powder at the end to increase nutritional value as well as enhance the taste.
  • You may add this to laddoos like atta laddu, besan laddu etc.
  • You may also thicken milk, add sugar and dry fruit powder and freeze to make a quick homemade kulfi.

Is this dry fruit powder safe for babies?/ At what age can we start giving this dry fruit powder?

Nuts can sometimes cause allergies in babies, hence it makes sense to be cautious when introducing nuts in baby’s diet. You may give this powder once baby is 10 months and above.

It also makes sense to avoid this dry fruit powder, if you have a family history of nut allergy.

When you start giving this dry fruit powder, give a very small amount on the first day. Keep an eye for any allergies or reactions for next couple of days before gradually increasing the quantity.

Early morning routine of a 6 years old – Making breakfast healthy and fun #OnceUponABreakfast

My daughter recently turned 6 years old. Those of you who follow us know that I am a doting mother and my day starts with having a cup of tea and getting my daughter ready for school.

My daughter is usually an early riser and gets up on her own by 7 am. So, that’s no problem. But the problem starts after that. So, she wants to get up and read in the morning or ride her bike. I have to keep pushing her to go to the bathroom and then have her breakfast, both of which take forever. Phew!! I know most moms can relate to this scenario. 🙂

 soulfull

I am very particular about her having a healthy breakfast in the morning and she is not allowed to ever skip breakfast and go to school. Given her routine during morning, I prefer things for her breakfast which are quick to make and still are healthy and nutritious. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and research has proven that kids who have a healthy breakfast are more attentive in the school and perform better.

A healthy breakfast should ideally contain whole grains and milk in some form. I also have to pack one snack and one lunch for my daughter, so I usually prefer something which she enjoys and can have quickly without me having to monitor. Breakfast cereals are always handy, when it comes to ease. However many of them have high content of sugar and preservatives which I am not comfortable with.

For a quick breakfast option, I quite like the Soulfull breakfast cereals. Their range of breakfast cereals ticks all my boxes. They are made from whole grains and traditional super foods like ragi and dal. Ragi is high on calcium and is very good for health. Ragi has been given to babies as a weaning food since time immemorial. The cereals are preservative-free and are available in many pleasing flavours for children like chocolate, vanilla, mango & strawberry.

They also have a range of millet muesli for grown ups. The best part is that their muesli is sugar-free, preservative-free and even gluten-free,  The muesli  have real nuts.

You may check out their whole range here

For us breakfast time has always been a bonding time and those who know me know that both me and my daughter are avid readers. She loves reading books and listening to stories and breakfast is a time when we also tell stories. We have this fictional character named ‘Ruby’, which I weave my stories around to teach her about healthy eating, good manners & hygiene. We also modify the old tales to suit what we believe in and to reinforce the values that I want to instil in her.

I frequently feel that the old fables are not relevant in current times in their original form. I don’t want my child to wait for a prince charming or hope for miracles to solve all her problems.

So, we changed “Jack and  the Beanstalk” where Jack does not steal things but makes friends with the giant and giant teaches him how to plant seeds and grow his own vegetables and he works hard and has a wonderful farm.

Our “Goldilocks and the three bears” , ends with Goldilocks thanking the bears for porridge and saying sorry for breaking the chair. Baby bear and she become friends.

Soulfull has come up with a similar concept and I was excited to see it. They have given a new spin to old fables like ‘Town mouse & Country mouse’, ‘Hare and the Tortoise’ and many more. I know where I can go now, when I am running out of ideas. The best part is the stories keep children engaged and are set in modern times which children can relate to, so it is much easier to drive your point home.

Holi, the festival of colors is just round the corner and it is one of the most-waited festivals in India. It is a fun festival specially for kids since they can get wet to their heart’s desire and play with color with their friends.

Top 10 tips for celebrating safe Holi with kids

But there are common and justified worries of parents related to this wonderful festival. Let us take a look at how we can ensure a safe and enjoyable Holi for our kids.

Be Safe during Holika Dahan

Holika dahan is celebrated a day before Holi. A bonfire is lit and puja is done around the bonfire. Ensure that the children stay at a safe distance from the fire and do not go near it.

Use Safe colours

Synthetic colours can contain harmful ingredients like lead, mercury and aluminium bromide, which can cause rashes and other health issues.
Holi is a festival of colours, so ensure you buy only certified, organic colours for your kids even if they cost a little more.

Make your own colors

In Indian culture, it was common for families to make their own colors for Holi and same can be done now too, though in a smaller scale.

  • Soak tesu or palash flowers in a buket of water to get a natural orange color.
  • Mix turmeric powder with flour to get yellow color.
  • Mix dried mehndi leaves with flour to get green color.

Ban water balloons

Water-filled balloons may seem fun and they can cause severe injuries. Instruct kids not to use water balloons.

Keep an eye on kids

Kids should play Holi under adult supervision. This will ensure there are no untoward incidents and immediate action can be taken in case of an injury.

Dressing right

Clothes after playing Holi need to be discarded sto dress your child in clothes which are not very new or favourite. Stick to darker shades of clothes and choose clothes which will cover most of the body. Cotton full-sleeved clothes would work best.

Oil child’s body to protect skin

Apply coconut or mustard oil liberally all over your child’s body before playing Holi. Oil forms a protective layer on skin and will not allow color to stick to body.

  • Oil your child’s hair well.

Protect child’s head and face

Apply face cream on child’s face. If your child agrees, wrap a scarf or cap over her head after oiling the hair.

Conserve water

Teach children about scarcity of water and tell them that we should not waste too much water while playing Holi.

Use natural ubtan to wash off colours

  • For taking off color afterwards, you can bathe your child with an uptan of  besan and curd. The tartness of curd helps in taking off color.
  • Do not use harsh soaps to take off color.

So, you might remember that I started an experiment with PediaSure for kids last month and I promised I would keep you guys updated regarding the progress we made with our experience. You can check out the previous article about this PediaSure review here

PediaSure– for Healthy Weight and Height Gain

Let me start from where it all began:-

My daughter is 5 years old and she has always been a lean kid. I am personally not worried about her being lean, but I do want to improve her immunity so that she falls sick less often.

We started this experiment with PediaSure usage in January, 2017.

My daughter’s weight at the time of starting this experiment – 18.2 kg

How I used PediaSure for my daughter?

My daughter may not be the fussiest eater out there, but the one thing that she doesn’t like too much is milk and I was looking for a way to make that process a little easier on all of us. I usually give her milk twice a day as part of her breakfast and evening snack.

I did not want to reduce her milk intake; hence I modified it and decided to use PediaSure as per the recommendations on the jar. I added a few scoops of PediaSure powder to milk and gave it to my daughter.

Her reaction to PediaSure so far

  • So far, she likes the Premium Chocolate flavour. I did buy the vanilla flavour for her as well, but she still prefers chocolate.
  • She hasn’t had a major problem with colds and or a cough in the past month, despite frequent weather changes here in Bangalore. This is a definite positive for us.
  • I have seen a few unique PediaSure recipes online and I’m planning to try a few next month. I’ll be sure to share this PediaSure feedback too and let you know just how it turned out.

Important points to note while using PediaSure for kids

  1. PediaSure powder is for kids who are 2 years and above, so refrain from giving it to babies and toddlers below that age.
  2. It is not for kids who are lactose intolerant as it contains milk solids. It should not be given to kids who have galactosemia either.
  3. It is a supplement to help with growth along with a good diet and it should not be taken as a substitute for healthy, homemade food.
  4. PediaSure should be added only to lukewarm water or milk and should not be heated under any circumstance as heating it above 35 degrees centigrade kills its probiotic nutrients.

PediaSure is easily available in all supermarkets and pharmacies. Besides this, you can even buy PediaSure online

You may order PediaSure from PediaSure website

That’s the update for month 2 and #90DaysWithPediaSure. Be sure to tune in for my next update on #MyPediaSureJourney

Disclaimer: Although Abbott approached me to try PediaSure for kids, all the experiences and opinions shared in posts are my own.

50+ Iron rich foods for babies & kids

Importance of Iron in Infant’s diet

Meeting iron needs of an infant

Nutritionist’s view of iron needs in an infant

Iron rich foods for babies -That iron is an essential mineral for human body is well-known but how important it is for babies and young children and how can we as parents ensure that children are getting enough iron as per their everyday needs. We are very happy to have Dr. Manjari Chandra, Consultant Nutrition, Max Multi Speciality Centre to shed more light on this subject. Over to her now.

Importance of Iron in Infant's diet & 50 Iron rich foods for babies & kids

Importance of Iron in Infant’s diet & 50 Iron rich foods for babies & kids

Iron deficiency is rampant in infants and the problem needs an urgent attention. Iron deficiency can cause irreversible damages to brain development of children and affect their quality of life at later point. Therefore, intake of nutrient dense food in diet is essential to overcome the consequences of micronutrient deficiency and enhance overall productivity in the long run.

As infants turn six months old, their nutritional need also increases with growing age. In case of iron deficiency, body doesn’t receive enough iron from diet to carry out essential bodily function, which ultimately leads to various health implications, of which child may not recover. In the country, iron deficiency is observed highest (49.5%) among children in the age group of 6-23 months. The grim statistics reflect the sad state of health among infants with the fact that Indian children aged 1-3 years consume only one third of the recommended amount of iron daily.

Role of iron in baby’s brain and cognitive development is crucial.

  • Iron and zinc help develop baby’s immunity and safeguard baby against various infections. Since, 90% of brain develops during pregnancy & the first 1000 days of the infant’s life, deficiency of the right kind of nutrition that meets all their requirements for iron and other essential vitamins and minerals during this time, may lead to irreversible damage to a child’s brain development and physical growth as well as make him more vulnerable to illness as a child and as an adult.
  • It is the irony of situation that at the time when infants’ need of iron is greater, they are receiving miniscule amount of iron in their diet leading to a huge gap. Incidentally, it is also the period where the brain demand of iron is also greater and because of this gap we are losing valuable IQ points in our children. Mostly the society and the parents are ignorant of this huge loss to the country.
  • Effects of iron are not apparent at an early stage of infant’s life but may get noticed at a later point, but at this time, damages had become so advanced that it gets difficult for child to recoup from its consequences.

Though iron is an essential nutrient for all age group but infants have greater need of it due to their rapidly growing age. Infants have 5 times smaller stomach than adults’ but they need 5 times more nutrients per kg of body weight. Thus, the requirement should be met by right kind of foods like vitamins & minerals enriched food or fortified grains/foods or iron/multi vitamin drops supplementation from 6 months of age, when solid foods are started.

In most of the public health programs Iron deficiency is only understood in terms of anemia. Mild iron deficiency may not lead to anemia but may be enough to hinder proper brain development in a human being.  Also, the extent of adverse effects on the developing brain is largely dependent on the timing and duration of iron deficiency as iron is involved in many central nervous system processes that could affect infant behavior and development.

Iron needs should be fulfilled through complementary iron rich foods for babies.

  • In India, infants are fed whatever is consumed by elders in the family. Indian diets are majorly grain and plant based, with little intake of iron rich pulses, green leafy vegetables and meat. The Indian grain and plant diets are high in macronutrients like carbohydrates, fats and proteins, but are very low in micronutrients such as iron and zinc, leading to deficiencies.”
  • Additionally, infants need nutrient dense food since their stomach size is too small to take in the amount of food that is required to meet the daily micronutrient needs.
  • Evidence suggests that readymade vitamins & minerals enriched food or fortified grains/foods or iron/multi vitamin drops supplementation, when consumed along with homemade food, can effectively decrease the risk of moderate to severe anemia and iron deficiency anemia by nearly 27%. They also improve hemoglobin levels among children between 12-17 months of age.
  • Any supplement must only be taken after the advice from doctor.
  • Here are iron rich foods for babies. A diet rich in iron should include:
    • Green leafy vegetables like spinach, fenugreek leaves, dill leaves, amaranth leaves ( chaulai ), mustard leaves ( sarson ka saag), bathua saag , radish greens, turnip greens, coriander leaves, curry leaves, drumstick greens,  kale, collard greens and many more. You can choose the greens easily available in your part of the world. Greens can be eaten as a curry, in dals, raita, salads etc.
  • Pulses are rich in iron and should be a part of every meal in some way. Lentils like moong, masoor, pigeon peas or toor dal, soya beans, kidney beans, peas are all good sources of iron.
  • Dark green vegetables like broccoli, green peas, green beans, broad beans or sem, etc.
  • Other vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce are also rich in iron.
  • Include whole grains and millets like amaranth, brown rice, oats and whole wheat.
  • Dried fruits like raisins, dried apricots, dates, dried figs are also rich in iron and should be included in children’s daily diet in some way.

Iron plays a crucial role in brain development of child and its deficiency can have serious consequences that can persist through adulthood. Therefore, it is imperative that parents understand the importance of nutrition for their child’s overall growth and development. On a brighter side, timely intervention can prevent the damages caused by iron deficiency.

Percentage of daily recommended energy and micronutrients intake to be sourced from complementary foods for babies from 6-8 months.

Top 5 points that every parent should know about AUTISM

Autism or autism spectrum of diseases is an often heard but also often misunderstood term. There is so much information on the internet about it that it leaves you baffled.

I recently had the good fortune of attending a live webinar by Himalaya BabyCare. It was an insightful session with Dr. Anupama Maruvada, who is a practicing child behaviour therapist, an expert in the field of treating autistic children. She gave us plenty of information to help understand autism better and also patiently answered all our questions.

Top 5 things to know about AUTISM

What is Autism?

Autism refers to a neurological condition in which the child faces social, communicational and behavioural difficulties. it is a developmental disability which affects how the child interacts with others and perceives the world.

One of the things that parents must understand that an autistic child is special but not retarded. They need special intervention from experts.

When is the earliest age when autism can be detected?

Autism can be detected as early as under a year by an expert therapist. According to Dr. Maruvada, if at all you have any doubts about your baby’s development, do not wait and watch. According to her, early intervention is the key to reversing behavioural issues caused by autism.

If as a parent, you have any concerns regarding the development of your baby or you notice delays in regular developmental milestones, do mention it to your child’s paediatrician, who can then guide you on the next step by referring you to a therapist.

What are the symptoms that parents should be on the look out for?

There are many early symptoms that might give you an indication of an underlying problem:

  • Significant inability to communicate with family verbally and with gestures
  • Diminished social interaction
  • Does not make eye contact
  • Irregularities when playing with toys
  • Sitting in isolation when surrounded by the kids.

Are there any assessments for autism?

Autism is a wide spectrum and a child might be mild to severely autistic.
The Childhood Autism Rating Scale or CARS is a diagnostic assessment method that rates children on a scale from one to four for various criteria, ranging from normal to severe, and yields a composite score ranging from non-autistic to mildly autistic, moderately autistic, or severely autistic.

Can autism be cured?

Autism is a lifelong condition and cannot be cured, but it can be treated and reversed with early intervention. Early detection can make a huge difference and can help an autistic child to develop at almost the same pace as a normal child.

In short, autism is a neurological and behavioural disorder, which can be treated and reversed when it is detected early specially before the age of 18 months.

Summer Vacation Activities for Kids- Iona Entertainment Centre

So, as you guys know, most schools in Bangalore have closed for summer vacations and so has my daughter’s school. You guys also know how much I believe in activity based learning and getting involved with her. We have been doing a lot of fun activities in April both at home and outdoors. During this time, we visited a new mall in our neighbourhood, the Virginia Mall in Whitefield. It is a walkable distance from my home and there were so many interesting ads detailing the huge range of games, activities, food and drinks on offer so it was obvious that we had to visit.

The one thing in particular that we were quite excited about is the new entertainment centre in the mall. It is called IONA and it looked like it had a lot to offer.  After checking out all the great selection of activities available, we quickly realized that #IonaFunKaBoss had so much more to offer than our initial expectations – especially for my daughter – and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We have now visited it multiple times and come back happy each time.

What differentiates Iona from other entertainment centres is the wide variety of sports and gaming options, not just for the children but for adults too. It is huge and spread over 3 storeys and has some entertainment for visitors of every age. So, when we visit it as a family, it is not as if my mum or mum-in-law are getting bored, just sitting and waiting. There is so much to choose from at Iona for everyone, but I will list out a few of our favourites.

Clip n Cimb Zone

This has to be perhaps the most popular activity, Iona has to offer. India’s first Clip n Climb Zone, it is the only place in Bangalore for indoor rock climbing and rappelling.

Kids just love getting into a harness and then climbing the three storey high indoor rock. It is also good for adults and I can just picture many offices conducting their team building activities there.

The Virtual Reality or VR zone

The VR Zone at IONA has some amazing rides including Whiplash-360 and Virtual Roller

Coaster. It’s the perfect way to get some thrills and heart-in-the-mouth moments as on a

Roller Coaster. Prepare for lifts, drops, spinning, heaves, and pitch using six axis Hexapod

robotics for a 7D cinematic experience like no other. Suitable for kids over 8 years and adults.

My 9 year old nephew had a great time there and so does my hubby dearest.

Here are some of the VR games that you can find there:

Virtual Cricket

There is something about men and cricket, so it is natural that men should gravitate towards this interactive one-of-its-kind 360 degree cricket simulator, where you could challenge the best bowlers in the world and get accolades and money if you win.

To top it all, they now have the inimitable Chris Gayle as their official brand ambassador. Can’t wait to see him when he visits Bangalore.

If you love sports, racing and competing with your friends, then Iona has many things to offer to you. They also have Multi Sports Pitch, specially made imported turf to play multi sports like Box cricket, Tennis, Hockey, Badminton and more, I could see many having a whale of a time there..

Ticket Monster

Ticket Monster is the same great game as the very popular Big Bass Wheel. This is really a game of pure luck and we do try it most times. My mother was very happy to try this.

Minion Whacker

Do you like Minions? Do you like hammering? Well finally these things have been combined to make the ultimate in banging naughty Minions with a big Hammer game. I love hammering those naughty minions every time we visit there.

The Play Zone

Other than all the adventure, their play zone for young kids is also so much better than any other I have seen. My daughter absolutely loves going there and we just HAVE to visit it whenever we go to Iona. It has a variety of activities and all the safety features needed for the young children to play freely in a safe environment.

Futsal Pitch

We haven’t seen it yet but have heard that Iona is the first entertainment centre in South India to get two rooftop football pitches. Just book in advance, get your mates or form an office team and have a blast.

Once you are done with the adventures and the games, there is also a cafe huge food court offering lots of selections from India and beyond and a bar to cool down with some refreshing cocktails or a bucket or beers to savour with family and friends alike.

Planning a pre-schooler’s wardrobe on budget

I have been planning on doing some decluttering and sorting of clothes this summer and I started with my daughter’s cupboard last weekend.

Now my daughter is 6 years old, so she is a little lady already and quite particular about her wardrobe. Also, most mums of girls would know, how easy it is to get enticed by all the pretty dresses and clothes and buy more than you need.

Planning a pre-schooler’s wardrobe on budget

So, basically I took out all her clothes and sorted them based on what we need, what we don’t need, to be discarded, to be donated etc. To my surprise, most of the clothes were in great condition but did not fit her anymore. And these were expensive clothes, which were worn barely once or twice. I was depressed to see so much money going down the drain and wowed not to buy too many expensive everyday clothes for her from now on.

Here are my learnings from this experience.

  • Children need more everyday wear, comfortable clothes which they can wear to the park, at home etc. And these need not be very expensive.
  • T-shirts, shorts, jeans, cotton dresses, leggings work best for everyday wear.
  • It is okay to have one or two party dresses etc. for special occasions but anymore and you will face what I did too.

My daughter is soon starting grade 1 and she will be wearing her uniform from this year, which means she will need these clothes even less. She did not have any uniform in pre-school, which was another reason for my irrational buying.

I am always for buying good stuff that is priced affordably, specially for kids since they outgrow every thing so fast. This has been a concern for every generation and you might remember how our mothers used to buy one size bigger clothes for us, so we could wear them for a couple of years at least. 🙂 Now, I don’t want my daughter to wear over-sized clothes, but I also don’t want to spend a bomb on clothes which she will outgrow in a few months.

This led me to fbb – India’s fashion hub and as usual they have some really stylish clothes at very affordable prices. The price range for kid’s clothing starts from as low as INR 99. It also means that little ones can have more stylish clothes at the price of may be one dress from some other place.

I am heading to fbb this week and will soon share our haul with you guys. I can’t wait to see what all I can find for my 6 years old without giving an arm and a leg.

How to Replace Milk in Toddler’s Diet

$

My 2 year old toddler does not like milk. He hardly has 100 ml throughout the day. How can I give healthy replacements to milk to ensure he gets enough calcium and protein?

how to replace milk in toddler's diet

Although milk is a good source of protein , calcium and fat and most toddlers like having milk, you need not fret if your toddler does not want to have those 2 glasses of milk every day.

Also, there is an increasing incidence of children who are lactose intolerant. These children cannot take milk as it causes allergy.

Paneer

Paneer or Indian cottage cheese is an excellent way to replace milk. My daughter refused to have milk, but she would gobble up little pieces of homemade paneer sauteed in a little ghee.

If your kid likes paneer, give that as curry or snacks. Grate it and mix it in his favourite dishes. You can also knead it with flour and make chapatis or paranthas out of it. Paneer is also easier to digest and can be given to children who are intolerant to plain milk.

Cheese

If your baby likes cheese, you can add that in his food. Add it to sandwiches, pasta, noodles. You can even add grated cheese to khichdi or dals or various soups. A slice of processed cheese is supposed to have similar nutrition as one glass of milk, though it has a lot of salt.

Curd/ Yogurt

You can give curd to your kid. Add fruits to make them into smoothies. Curd can be given in the form of curd rice, which my daughter loves or can be turned into shrikhand, fruit yogurt, lassi, buttermilk and so many other delicious options.

How to make homemade curd

Flavour the milk with fruits

If your child doesn’t like plain milk, another way of giving milk is by making shakes. Add your kid’s favourite fruits like mango, banana , strawberry etc. to make it more colourful, tastier  as well as healthier. You can add any seasonal fruits.

This works specially well in summer when a chilled glass of delicious milkshake is always welcome.

Lentils for protein

Also, remember that protein can be had from various other sources. Eggs, fish, chicken are all rich sources of protein. If you are vegetarian, pulses or dal are full of protein. Serve a wide variety of lentils. Tur dal (pigeon peas), moong dal (green gram),  chickpeas, rajma (kidney beans) , masoor (red lentils) etc are all rich sources of protein.

Add Soy to baby’s diet

Soyabean is one of the richest vegetarian source of protein. You can use the bean or soya granules or nuggets as found in market. Tofu or soy-cheese is also a great source of calcium as well as protein.

Calcium is also found in soy products.

How to make soya milk at home

Soya tikki/ Soya chaap recipe

Add Nuts & Nut milks to diet

Nuts are very nutritious and milks like almond milk, coconut milk can be used in baby’s meals instead. If you child does not like whole nuts, you can make powders or make laddoos.

How to make instant almond milk powder

How to make dry fruit powder

Weight gain recipe: Dry fruit laddoo

Add ghee/ butter to replace fat from milk

Whole milk also provides fat for growth of toddlers and fat is essential for healthy growth of toddlers. It can be easily sourced from cheese, a little butter on sandwich, ghee in baby’s food.

Most curries have some oil. Do not go overboard when adding ghee or butter in baby’s food as it may cause problems in the long run.

Replace the fluids from milk

One more thing to remember is that milk also provides fluids which are important for body, so ensure your kid gets enough water. You can serve soups, diluted freshly squeezed juice to your kid.

Dark Green and leafy vegetables

Dark Green and leafy vegetables are rich in calcium, so add vegetables like spinach and broccoli to your toddler’s diet.

If your baby is allergic to milk / lactose intolerant, you must consult the baby’s doctor. Doctor will prescribe the appropriate diet and supplements needed in such a case. But as you can see, you can ensure that your baby gets enough protein and calcium even if he or she is not crazy about milk.

Handmade rakhi designs for Rakshabandhan

DIY rakhi ideas

The festival of Rakshabandahan or Rakhi as it is commonly called is just a couple of weeks away. This Indian festival is a day for brothers and sisters and is celebrated with greater joy across India. This festival celebrates and strengthens the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie rakhi or an embellished thread on their brother’s wrist and pray for their well-being. Brothers also promise to take care of their sisters and spoil them with gifts.

There are many legends and mythological story where someone like Draupadi, Yamuna or Rani Karnavati tied rakhi and asked Krishna, Yam and Emperor Humayun for help and they left everything to help and save their sisters. The bond of rakhi is considered stronger than blood relations.

Being the only sister to my two brothers, this was and still is a very important and joyful day for me. Though all of us stay far apart now, the approach of this festival always fills me with anticipation and excitement. My daughter too loves sending rakhi to her cousin brother who stays in another city.

We did this post when it was close to Independence Day and I thought it works perfect for Republic Day as well.

Indian Independence Day is approaching and soon shops, schools, apartments will all be coloured in the colours of Indian tricolour. Flags will be waving everywhere and most schools would have already started preparations for parades and cultural programs.

It is important to teach the children the importance of Independence day/ Republic day, so they do not consider it just another holiday. It is also a great opportunity to teach children about the history and independence struggle of India.

What is Independence day?

Toddler Nutrition: How to meet the Nutritional needs of Toddlers

The nutrition needs of a toddler is very different from that of an older kid. A child goes through rapid growth upto 6 years. These early years are the ones when there is maximum growth physically and mentally. Studies have shown that by six years of age the brain attains 90% of its adult size. They get milk teeth, they develop bones and muscles and their brain develops rapidly. In fact, almost 60% of height and 30% of weight gain happens upto 6 years of a child’s age. You can check out the developmental chart and delays in the article we shared earlier.

How to meet nutrition needs of toddlers

But as most mums of toddlers would confirm, this is also the age of fussy eating and being picky about their food.  Since this is such a critical phase, kids need the right nutrition and balanced diet to support this growth. We get so many queries that children do not eat much, but it is not just enough to make them eat a lot of food. It is also essential that they eat a well-balanced diet which includes optimum amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats as well as vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients like DHA.

Issues parents face while ensuring balanced diet intake for toddlers

Too busy to eat

Toddlers are busy bodies and they are so occupied in exploring their new surroundings that they do not want to sit down and take a break to eat. A lot of times food goes everywhere except where it is supposed to go. It is a common to see mommies and daddies running behind kids with bowls of food.

Fussy Eating

Toddlers are notorious for being picky. They like one thing today and but will refuse it the next day. They might throw a huge tantrum just because you served food for a green coloured plate when they wanted the blue one.

Food habits and choices

Sometimes food choices like vegetarianism and veganism can make it a little difficult to get some nutrients easily specially if the child refuses to have other available sources. For example, choline which is essential for brain development is present in egg yolk.

Not possible to provide a lot of variety every day

Nuclear families mean often busy parents and rushed meals. It is not often possible to make a variety of food every single day with work as well as taking care of a demanding toddler.

What can a parent do to provide balanced nutrition?

One can try many home cooked food items that I have written about in my other blogs but also there is merit in giving some additional health food drinks.

Junior Horlicks is one such health food drink that is tailor-made to meet the needs of growing toddlers between the age of 2 to 6 years. It has been designed Based on WHO’s nutrient guidelines and has DHA, Choline, Iron, Iodine etc. which are important for brain development and function. It also helps in ensuring good health and weight gain with its 50% more protein* and 23 nutrients. It contains immunity supporting nutrients for building immunity in kids and High protein and milk calcium important for bone growth essential for height gain.

Also, for people who are vegetarian, there is good news that it is completely vegetarian.

I want to sum up by saying that a good health drink can provide supplemental nutrition and fill the gaps in toddler’s overall nutrition due to fussy eating habits. It is best to choose a health drink which has been designed to meet the requirement of this age rather than choosing a drink meant for older children. Do you give a health drink to your child?

Diwali is my most favourite festival of the year. We have just finished celebrating navratri and are now gearing up for celebrating Diwali or Deepawali at the end of this month.

I had shared this post a couple of years back and you will how special this festival is for me and how sentimental I am about it.

Meri Ghar Wali Diwali

Diwali also known deepawali is celebrated across India and is synonymous with yearly deep cleaning of homes, sweets, family bonding , new clothes and of course lights. Today we will share 50+ ideas to celebrate Diwali in a fun and child-friendly way.

Diwali Cards

When you make a diwali card, it is best to use the usual symbols of Diwali which everyone relates to. The easiest ones are diyas, candles, lights, crackers, rockets, chakras, flower pots or anar, lanternsYou may also use traditional religious symbols like Ganesha and swastik. Use a lot of glitter, shiny paper, sparkles to make it shiny and pretty. You may also use quilling to make diyas, candle flames etc.

We made this lovely, yet simple DIY 3D card for diwali last year. It has 2 diyas, flower pots and lots of sparkly stars. We also used glitter pens to make it more festive. Click the link below to see detailed step-by-step process.

Diwali has a number of stories attached to it, the most popular being that Lord Ram and Sita returned to Ayodhya on this day after 14 years of exile and people lit their way with diyas.

Diwali is a festival of 5 days, so at this time you can read books and tell stories to children to teach them about the significance of each day.

Use lots of flowers

Flowers make any Indian festival more beautiful. They make your house looks instantly festive and colourful. You may use flowers in rangolis, in toran or bandanwars.

Place diyas and candles

This is of course a no-brainer. Take out your most beautiful candles and diyas and place them all over keeping in mind the safety concerns. Do not place diyas near curtains etc.

Use brass, copper and bronze thalis, diyas etc.

Take out your brass lamps, broke thalis, lotas, glasses etc. and decorate your rangoli , diyas display, flower displays etc.

Use pretty dupattas to decorate your tables, couches etc.

I love using old, beautiful dupattas during this time to drape the couches, use them as table runners and even to decorate the curtains.

Get out those special, colourful cushion covers and bed spread reserved specially for this festival

Now is the time to deck up your house with those silk cushion covers. Use bright colours like oranges, red and yellows.

Get dressed in traditional wear

I always dress in a sari during Diwali and my daughter dresses up in a lehenga or a pretty salwar suit. My husband loves his kurta pyjamas. It just makes everything more festive and special.

“Jungle Magic Garden Sciencz – Explore the magical world of Botany” Review

My first grader who is almost 7 years old now is learning about plants in her school and it is wonderful to see her taking a lot of interest in them. She first learned about different types of plants and now she is curious about how they grow and she has planted and grown some plants both in school and at home.

She is also full of questions about how we grow our food, cereal crops, pulses etc. and as always I think of this as an opportunity to let her explore the topic herself. I, like many others, believe that just mugging stuff won’t help kids unless they are aware of actual goings on of any subject.

I have got some books for her and was looking for more resources when I landed my hands on just the perfect kit.

It is the “Jungle Magic Garden Sciencz – Explore the magical world of Botany” kit by Piramal Healthcare. So, here is my review of the kit, which will give you a peek of this wonderful product.

Packaging

The kit comes very well packaged in a carton, with stuff neatly packaged in individual pouches and ziplock bags.

Contents

The pack contains:

  1. Instruction Booklet
  2. Pack of mustard seeds
  3. Pack of wheat seeds
  4. Pack of green gram seeds
  5. Pack of fenugreek seeds
  6. Pack of coriander seeds
  7. Pack of marigold seeds
  8. 2 measuring cups
  9. 6 small pots
  10. 2 droppers
  11. 2 wooden spatula
  12. 5 soil pellets
  13. 1 gardening tray
  14. 1 piece coloured yarn
  15. 1 big mono box

Age-group

Suitable for children who are 7 years old and above.

What can children learn from this kit?

The kit is aimed at kids to understand basics of botany.

The kit can help kids understand the process of germination, photosynthesis, how do roots work, planting a seed, growth of a sapling etc.

The instruction booklet comes loaded with lots and lots of fun facts and knowledge about:

1) Farming in India like farming seasons

2) Various rabi and kharif crops

3) Different types of soil found in India.

4) Understanding soil pellets and coco peat.

5) Capillary action in plants

6) Soil contamination and its effects on plants

7) Sunlight and its importance for plant growth

8) Greenhouse effect

and much more

The kit looks exhaustive and perfect for a kid who is ready to start foray into the world of botany. My daughter is super excited to have it and we cannot wait to start our experiments with it. Best part is the experiments and instructions are quite well-explained, so kids can read, understand and explore with minimal supervision.

Top 13 Tips for Introducing Healthy Eating Habits in Toddlers

$

As your baby becomes a toddler, you will soon discover an iron will to do things themselves and their own way. It is good to encourage this natural tendency to help them become independent. Be protective but not over-protective.

How to introduce healthy eating habits in kids

One of the important skills is healthy eating habits and kids learn from what they see around themselves. So it is important that parents do what they preach. Here we enlist some handy tips to inculcate healthy eating habits in toddlers:

Mix it up

It is important to serve variety not just to introduce them to your tot but also to keep boredom away. Who wants to eat the same cereal and rice each day. Serve nutritious, colourful meals and your kid will start enjoying them sooner or later.

Serve small portions

Parents often feel tempted to load their child’s plates with food. This may put off the child enough not to eat what she wants and also leads to wastage. Small portions and frequent meals are the way to go. If the child finishes up the plate or wants more of something, you can always serve again.

Serve food at regular times

You should not let your child eat throughout the day and skip meal times. It may be tempting to do so if the child has not eaten well, but it will continue if she fills her little tummy up between mealtimes. Serve breakfast, lunch and dinner along with 2-3 snacks.

Eat together

Try eating together as a family whenever possible. Seeing elders eat is a great motivation to imitate them for a toddler. When your toddlers sees you enjoying healthy, homemade food, s/he is more likely to try those her/himself.

Cut down on milk

If you toddler still has 4 bottles of milk, that may be cutting down her appetite for solids. Give between 12-20 oz milk in a day at regular times preferably only a couple of times. As you child grows, limit milk intake to not more than 250-300 ml during the day.

Let your kid explore

Show the child real vegetables, fruits and other raw items. It is much better than showing them pictures in a book. It will also entice them to try them raw or in a salad. Vegetables like cucumber and tomato are great.

Serve finger foods

Finger foods allow toddlers to assert their independence and feel proud that they can feed themselves. You must encourage this by serving healthy finger foods. Finger foods can be any kind of food which can be easily head by tiny fingers and taken to mouth.

75+ Finger Food Ideas for toddlers

75+ Finger Foods for Toddlers

No fast foods

Your child does not know about sweets and fries and burgers till you introduce them to her. So delay this as long as possible and when she does come to know about them, serve them only once in a while as a treat. Also, talk t the child about healthy and unhealthy/junk foods so that they become responsible eaters themselves. These good habits will serve them for life.

Serve new foods often.

If a child rejects something new, do not force it but do not take that as a cue to not serve it in future. Keep serving it in different forms and your kid may finally feel tempted enough to try. Say, you child hated egg when served it scrambled, next serve it as an omelette or boiled.

Disguise food as something more enticing.

Roll up a parantha or chapatti stuffed with rajma and fresh vegetables like onions and tomatoes and salad leaves, wrap in a paper towel and serve with cheese and tomato sauce as a Mexican burrito or enchilada. Serve salads in innovative shapes.

Sprouts and chickpeas salad for mums

Desserts are not mandatory

Save desserts and sweets for special occasions. They should not be part of everyday meals.

Keep chocolates at bay as much as possible. Toddlers who are not introduced to chocolates at home did not feel tempted even when others offer.

Serve water

Water is the best beverage. If your child does not like water, squeeze fresh fruits like sweetlime, lemon and orange into water and give rather than serving packaged juices and drinks.

Practice what you preach.

Above all, you cannot expect your toddler to eat healthy and drink water when you yourself down carbonated drinks and eat greasy, heavy food. Remember that kids do not do what we tell them but they follow what they see around them.

Following these tips consistently will definitely ensure that your kids develop healthy eating habits over time. Do you have any other tips that you would like to share.
